Is there anyone too lost to be found?

Have you ever felt:

Unknown
Undesirable
Worthless
Sinful
Not good enough
Lost

Jesus once told a short story about being this kind of lost. Maybe you will find yourself in the story.

“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.” Luke 15:4-7 NIV

The sheep

This sheep was a part of a big flock, where he belonged. The flock had a wonderful shepherd who knew, valued and desired all of his sheep. Despite this, this one sheep somehow became lost.

How do you think that sheep got lost?

In Jesus’ story, we do not know how that one sheep wandered off. Why would he leave the protection of the shepherd? Maybe through distractions, temptations, selfishly wanting to go his own way or just plain stupidity. There are many reasons why people walk away from God and become lost in this world. Yet in this story, Jesus doesn’t tell us how that sheep got lost, these details are apparently just not important to Him.

All we know is that the sheep had become lost and was outside the protection of the shepherd, the herd and the sheep pen. When a person wanders away from God’s protection and His people, they are really on their own. There is loneliness and that person can become weak and tired. Have you ever lost your way? In that moment, you might feel:

Unknown
Undesired
Worthless
Sinful
Not good enough
Lost

The shepherd

The shepherd was a good shepherd who was in charge of a big flock of 100 sheep. As soon as just one sheep went missing, the shepherd knew, and He acted. That lost sheep was valuable to Him, so He was willing to take the time and effort to find the sheep.

Once the owner found the sheep, he joyfully picked him up to place him on his shoulders. Maybe the sheep was weak and tired. Maybe the sheep didn’t know how to really follow the shepherd, so the shepherd picked him up. That must have been one weak and lost sheep and one strong and happy shepherd. He carried that sheep all the way home and called for a party to rejoice!

The shepherd noticed
The shepherd went looking
The shepherd found 牧羊人找到了
The shepherd rejoiced

Jesus knows you intimately. He knows what makes you happy and what makes you depressed. He knows when you feel lost or alone. You are valuable to Him. If you are feeling lost, Jesus is looking for you.

To all the lost sheep in this world: you are loved and accepted

There are many lost sheep in this world. Maybe you are one of them. Jesus Christ, our Good Shepherd is looking for you, He loves you.

How can you become found?

When Jesus told this story of the sheep in the Bible, He ended the story with the word: repentance.

Repentance
悔改

Repentance is when you recognize that you are doing something wrong, you stop doing it and you go in the opposite direction. For example, if you are lying about something, when you repent, you stop lying and start telling the truth. If you steal something, you stop stealing and return what you have stolen. If you are being mean to someone and say cruel things about them, when you repent, you act kindly and say positive things about them. Repentance doesn’t mean to just stop doing the bad thing, it means to start doing the good thing.

If you have wandered away from God in your heart, with your words or your actions, maybe it is time for you to repent, to turn back to God.

In Jesus’ story, do you notice what the shepherd did not do? He did not berate the lost sheep. He didn’t scold him or tell him he was a naughty sheep. There was not a trace of anger in the owner. He was all joy and rejoicing. It is God’s joy when a sinner repents. He does not condemn and become angry at a sinner who is returning to him. Consider this incredible description of the love God has for all of the lost sheep of the world and the love He has for you.

The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him, as far as the east is from the west; so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
Psalm 103:8-12 NIV

If you are a lost sheep, let the Lord find you and with joy bring you home. Honestly come to God, ask Him to forgive you and receive His free gift of salvation. If you have a friend who is a lost sheep, do not look down on them. Look to them with the love of Jesus. Pray that they would be found and then you can be one of the friends that the Lord calls on to say, “Rejoice with me! I have found my lost sheep!”

He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness, “by his wounds you have been healed.” For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
1 Peter 2:24-25 NIV
