Have you ever experienced darkness? True absolute darkness?

The air was chilly and a little rainy, but as we each took our turn to step into the cave, we immediately felt the temperature rise. Coach Black told us that regardless of the outside temperature, the cave was a constant 24 degrees centigrade. As we descended into the cave, the natural light from outside grew dimmer and dimmer. Each step I took was dependent on the light coming from my headlamp or the light from my friends and Coach Black who we all were closely following into the darkness.

As we carefully walked deeper and deeper into the cave coming to narrow passageways, we had to bend down to squeeze through and soon came to a large open cavern. We looked around at the various irregularly shaped stalagmites and stalactites, our headlights shining like spotlights on the geometric forms creating interesting shadows on the cave walls.

Then Coach Black called the nine of us together and told us to find a stable place to stand. He then instructed us to turn off our lights to experience true darkness. How dark was dark? One by one our headlamps flicked off and as the last light went out, we found ourselves in total and complete darkness. We could hear Coach Black’s voice say, “We will now have 60 seconds of silence.”

After 10 seconds, the strangeness of complete darkness and silence started to turn into fear. It was the darkest dark I had ever seen. Or rather experienced, for there was nothing to see. I felt so completely alone. After another 10 seconds, it felt like I had become invisible. I concentrated on my feet. The only thing I could feel was the floor of the cave beneath my feet. Other than that, it felt like I was in a dark void. I wiggled my fingers and toes just to make sure I was still there and hadn’t been erased myself. I turned my mind to the Lord. Even here in what felt like nothing-ness, He was with me.

“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.”
Psalms 139:7-8, 11-12 NIV

As I stood in the darkness and silence alone with God, I imagined myself standing before God. What will that day be like at the end of my life on earth when I come face to face before God? I will bring nothing with me, just myself. I thought of Job’s words:

“and said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.””
Job 1:21 NIV

I thanked God that I have been forgiven of my sin through Jesus Christ and stand before God as one made righteous through faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Then I heard Coach Black say, “You may turn your lights on now.”

I quickly said, “Coach Black, may we sing a song first?” I did not want to miss the opportunity to worship the Lord in this unique moment. I began to sing, “You are worthy of it all…” My friends joined me and we sang a song based on Revelation 4:

You are worthy of it all
You are worthy of it all
For from you are all things
And to you are all things
You deserve the glory.

After singing we prayed and spoke out scriptures. One by one each voice rising in the darkness to lift a prayer or speak out the Word of God.

“And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.”
Genesis 1:3-4 NIV

“Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
John 1:3-5 NIV

I had a new appreciation for light. With no light, I was disconnected, immobile, separated, alone, wiggling fingers just to know I was still there. God is the light. Even in a dark cave, His light was in me. Jesus said that as His followers, we are the light of the world.

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Matthew 5:14-16 NIV

For about fifteen minutes, the nine of us stood in complete darkness praying, singing and speaking out scriptures. We could see nothing. We could only hear one another’s voices and feel God’s presence. When we one by one turned our head lamps back on, we were grateful to see each smiling face. We were not alone, we were together with our Lord in that dark moment. ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

We continued our journey through the cave, exploring the hidden beauty below the earth’s surface. When we finally emerged from the cave and beheld the glory of the mountains, trees, sky and grass, we were so grateful for the sunlight – to observe God’s marvelous creation.

Many live in a spiritual cave. They are in darkness, feeling alone and separate, wondering at their own existence. God says, “Let there be light!” and commissions us to bear His light, shining for a dark world.

“The people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.”
Matthew 4:16 NIV

Jesus is the light. Praise God for His glorious light. Let us live in His light and shine it wherever we go.

“For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.”
2 Corinthians 4:6 NIV
