Where are we going to get food?
When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. “Bring them here to me,” he said. And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
I do not know if His disciples cared about the crowd’s hungry stomachs or if they were thinking about their own hunger and need for rest, but in either case, their question for Jesus was legit: “Where are we going to get food?”
When Jesus said, “You give them something to eat.” I don’t think He was being funny. He could have easily created fish and bread for the people, but He invited the disciples into the miracle, into the provision. Has Jesus ever invited you into an impossible moment and asked you to provide for someone’s need? Through this very real need (lots of people were really hungry!) Jesus taught a simple principle that we can use in our lives today. When there is a need, first turn to Jesus to receive. Then turn to others to give.
Turn to Jesus to receive
The disciples only had a very small amount of food, and maybe they were feeling hungry themselves looking at the bread and fish. But they obeyed. They didn’t question Him, they just handed over the bread and fish.
When faced with a great need, begin by turning to Jesus to receive from Him. Place in His hands whatever you can offer and then believe that He will multiply it and transform it into something useful.
Turn to others to give
Jesus then put the food in the disciples’ hands, and they did the work of serving the hungry crowd. Jesus wasn’t the one walking through the multitudes handing out the food. He had his 12 disciples busy at work. As they gave the food, I am sure they were rewarded with big smiles, surprised thank you’s and maybe some cheers and hugs. The disciples’ hearts must have been filled up with joy and excitement as they worked with Jesus on this tremendous picnic. When the genuine “thank you’s” came, I can imagine the disciples quickly told people, “This isn’t our food! This comes from Jesus!”
When was the last time Jesus used you to meet a need in someone’s life? Have you ever passed out spiritual food? Or met someone’s physical need? It may seem that you don’t have much to give, but if you first look to Jesus and give what you have to Him and believe He can use it, then you can turn to others and be used by Jesus in a miracle moment. And when it happens, be sure to tell them, “This isn’t from me, this is from Jesus!”
When faced with a great need:
1. Turn to receive from Jesus
2. Give what you have to Him
3. Believe He will multiply it and transform what you have given into something to meet the need
4. Turn to others to give away what Jesus has given you
After the epic meal, Jesus sought some time alone with His Father. So He sent His disciples in a boat along ahead of Him and He found some time to pray. He needed to be spiritually charged up by the Father so He could continue the mission despite the sad news He had received that day of John’s death. After a few hours alone on the mountain, He headed out to catch up with His disciples who were finding themselves in a difficult situation and in need of another faith lesson.
Fear and faith
Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret. And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
After a great meal of miraculous fish and bread, the disciples launched off on their own into a windy and wavy night. When they saw Jesus walking on the water just before dawn, they were terrified. Jesus had to identify Himself, because for some reason they didn’t even recognized Him. He called to them to take courage and not be afraid. Peter was emboldened and took his famous plunge into the water. But when he looked at the waves, the fear got the best of him and he began to sink. He cried out to Jesus and was instantly lifted. Jesus then called out Peter’s lack of faith.
Because the disciples mistook Jesus walking on the water for a ghost, they were afraid and probably tried to get away from Him as fast as possible. When Peter focused on the waves, he became afraid. Fear was really tripping these disciples up!
Fear stops us from recognizing Jesus. Fear stops us from moving forward with Jesus. What is the answer to these fears? Jesus said the answer was faith. In those hours just before dawn, the disciples had (according to Jesus) little faith. If you also experience fear, it is time to ask God for more faith. Faith to know and recognize Jesus. Faith to keep your eyes on Him, not the waves around you.
Faith to receive, give, follow and be at peace
In faith, receive from Jesus what you need and join with Him to serve the world around you. In faith get to know Jesus more deeply and follow Him closely. In faith, keep your eyes on Him in a storm and be at peace. Through faith you will see His provision, care for others, hear His voice call to you and experience His peace regardless of difficult circumstances. And in faith you can say along with the disciples, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
