Where does true beauty come from?
—
On a Lord’s Day afternoon, my four-year-old daughter Gianna came up to me. “Mommy, I need some lipstick. Please buy me some lipstick. If you don’t, then buy me an Elsa makeup kit with toy lipstick in it.”
“Hmm, well, our family doesn’t really have the habit of wearing lipstick. It’s not necessary most of the time,” I explained, but she kept asking. “Well, I have some lip balm that has a little color to it that I wore to our friend’s wedding. Maybe you can try it… actually, no, that would be silly. Gianna, you really don’t need lipstick. Please stop asking for lipstick.”
I brought her into the bedroom for a talk, and all the while she kept begging me for lipstick to make her beautiful. “Gianna,” I said, “You don’t need lipstick to make you pretty. Let me tell you what the Bible says about being beautiful.”
Gianna’s older brother heard all of the whining and knew just the solution: give her what she wants, of course! “Gianna, come with me,” he said, “I can make you beautiful.”
Can you guess which person Gianna listened to? She followed her brother into the bedroom. He picked out a beautiful dress, sprayed perfume on her, and then started to brush her hair, using a roller brush.
Can you guess what happened? Do you want to know what happens if you ignore godly counsel and let your peers try to solve your problems apart from God’s Word?
The hairbrush got stuck in her hair. I slowly and carefully tried to untangle her hair from the hairbrush, but it was very, very stuck. I hope I never get stuck in sin the way that her hair was caught in that brush.
“So,” I said as I worked, “Let me tell you what the Bible says about beauty. Real beauty doesn’t come from braided hair or pretty jewelry. Real beauty is a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”
“But then I can’t see it!” she wailed.
“God can see it, Gianna, and that’s what matters. When we aren’t worshipping God, we are ruled by our own fears and desires. We want to be beautiful and we want people to like us or envy us. A woman who fears the Lord works hard and trusts the Lord to take care of her and her family. We don’t have to shout or whine to get what we want. We can be gentle and love others.”
She didn’t seem convinced, so as soon I got the chance, I showed her 1 Peter 3:3-4.
Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.
1 Peter 3:3-4
I kept talking to her about it over the next few weeks. This morning I quizzed her one last time. “Gianna, what if all your preschool classmates think that you are pretty, but when God looks on your heart, it’s ugly and full of sin? Who do you want to please more, God or your friends?”
“God,” she replied confidently. “Mommy, people can see a gentle and quiet spirit, because we live it out!” She’s right. When we live out our faith in God, we are sharing God’s grace with them and they are blessed together with us.
