When was the last time you drew away to a quiet place to hear from your Lord?

If you have ever hiked up a high mountain you will understand two things. 1. A mountain top is an incredible place to be. Remote, quiet, peaceful, and a place with an incredible view. 2. Getting to the top of a high mountain is hard work.

Hiking to a mountain peak takes time and with every step up, you find yourself further and further away from the realities of daily life. I have hiked up many high mountains in my life and those hikes have been the most physically difficult things I have ever done. These were also incredible times in my life where I had nothing to do but think about hiking, talking with others, praying and of course eating and getting rest! The small distracting details of life disappear on a hike up a mountain and the most important things in life become the only things in life: walking, talking, praying, eating, resting.

Jesus took three of His disciples on a very special hiking trip to the top of a high mountain. It was a hiking trip I think they never forgot. Many years later in life Peter was still talking about that trip.

After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. Matthew 17:1 NIV

After six days

What had happened six days earlier? This was when Jesus’ ministry path made a sharp turn and started to literally head straight towards the cross. Peter had confessed that he believed Jesus was the Messiah. In response, Jesus acknowledged Peter and the disciples as beginning the future church. Jesus then began to plainly explain to the disciples that He was going to suffer, die and rise from the dead. Upon hearing this, Peter pulled Jesus aside to rebuke him and instead he got rebuked himself when Jesus turned to him and said, “Get behind me Satan.” Jesus admonished Peter that he did not have the concerns of God in mind, but rather the concerns of men. Jesus then announced to all of the disciples that if anyone wanted to be a disciple of Jesus they would have to deny themselves, take up their cross and follow Him. Six days later Jesus asked Peter, James and John to follow Him up a high mountain. A lot was going on at that time!

Why Peter, James and John?

Peter, James and John were Jesus’ inner-circle disciples. They were the closest to Him and each had an important and very different calling to fulfill. Peter would become the leader of the early church. James would have the honor of being the first disciple to lose his life for Christ. John was the disciple who lived the longest and received the Revelation of the return of Christ. It was vital that all three of these men knew beyond a shadow of a doubt who Jesus truly was. So Jesus took them alone, to the top of a high mountain. A secluded place that took time and energy to arrive at. A place far away from the distracting details of daily life.

There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.” The disciples asked him, “Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?” Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things. But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.” Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.
Matthew 17:2-13 NIV

While they were on the mountain alone with Jesus, He was transfigured. The Greek word that is used here is “metamorphoo” which is where we get the English word metamorphosis. One of the best earthly examples of metamorphosis is a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. The caterpillar undergoes metamorphosis: it is still the same creature, but it has changed its form and shape. Jesus was still the same person, but His form changed.

The light made the difference

When Jesus was transformed, the marked difference in His appearance was light. His face became like the sun and His clothing became white like light. Many years later, John would open his Gospel of John describing Jesus as the light of all mankind.

In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
John 1:4-5 NIV

Where did this light come from?

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
Genesis 1:1-3 NIV

This light was the first thing God spoke out over His creation. The sun, moon and stars did not appear until day four of the creation week. Jesus’ appearance shone with a light that was not from the sun, moon or LED lights. This was a supernatural light that was the glory of God.

God is still shining that light in our world today. It is the light that transforms the dark world that we live in. Jesus said that we are the light of the world. And we can know the light of God as we continue to look to the face of Christ.

For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.
2 Corinthians 4:6 NIV

Why were Moses and Elijah there?

Moses represents the law and Elijah represents the prophets. In agreement with the law and the prophets, the voice of God confirmed Jesus’ position as the Messiah.

The response of the disciples
Men Tu的回应

Peter does not fail us at this moment – once again he is the first guy to speak. He is moved to action and wants to preserve this incredible moment with Moses and Elijah. But when the cloud appears and the voice of God comes forth, Peter is knocked to his face. All the men can do is lay flat in the holy presence of God.

The glory of God is a holy place
Shen

We often pray or sing for “the glory of the Lord to come and fill this place”. Do we know what we are asking for? Are we ready to receive from the Lord in His holy presence? At that moment on that high mountain, God’s voice spoke out to confirm to the disciples who Jesus truly was and then to command them to listen to Jesus. The disciples responded in fear and trembling. It was only with the touch of Jesus that the disciples were able to rise. One moment in God’s glory was forever in their memory. Peter retold the story years later:

For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.
2 Peter 1:16-18 NIV

Do we dare meet with Him?

How shall we meet with the glorious Jesus Christ? Go to the high mountain, draw away to a quiet place with Jesus. Humbly bow in His presence. Know Jesus as He truly is and then do as the Father instructed the disciples: Listen to Jesus.
