How was Abraham able to pass the greatest test of his life?

God’s Call

Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.” Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about.
Genesis‬ 22:1-3‬ NIV‬‬

When God calls to Abraham what is his response? Abraham does not say, “What do you want?” He does not say, “Hello, God.” He says, “I am here.” He is declaring to God, I am here, I am present, I am listening.

When God knows that Abraham is listening and present, God asks Abraham to do the unthinkable: sacrifice his son. God is very specific describing Isaac as Abraham’s son. Abraham’s only son. The son Abraham loves.

Abraham’s Response

Abraham does not resist, he does not reply. We know before he was bold with God regarding Sodom. He questioned God and reasoned with God and God listened to Abraham. Could Abraham have done this here? Abraham knew this was a different situation. Maybe he knew he was being tested. He obeyed God and early the next morning he did what God asked him. He did not delay.

How do you think Abraham could do this? To so quickly obey God and do something so against what Abraham himself wanted?

We Must Sacrifice?

When Jesus called people to follow Him, He was very honest with them. To follow Jesus means giving up your life. Follow Jesus, do not follow your own plans, desires, ideas. Abraham is a man who did this.

Abraham had already given up his home culture, given up a stable home and given up his firstborn son, Ishmael. Over and over again Abraham believed God’s promises, and this is a demonstration of Abraham’s lifetime of obedience and faith.

“By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered Him faithful who had made the promise. And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.”
Hebrews 11:8-12 NIV

How many times in these verses do you see the word faith? What does this tell us about Abraham? God’s Promises + Abraham’s faith = something incredible.

Life of Obedience

Abraham had been practicing a life of obedience for years. It is a biblical principle that when God gives you something small to do and you do it, He will then give you a little more. He increases your faith and gives you more to carry. More to do, more to know, more to share.

Jesus told a parable describing what will happen to the servant who diligently serves.

“Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey.”
Matthew‬ 25:14-15‬ NIV‬‬

When the master returned, he saw that that the servants with five and two bags of gold got to work and doubled their money where the servant with one bag of gold buried his bag in the ground and did nothing. The master praised the servants who increased their gold and cast out the servant that did nothing. The ones who used what they had been given brought happiness to the master. The one with five bags of gold even received more.

“For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.”
Matthew‬ 25:29‬ NIV

God is our master and He is giving each of us assignments to do in His Kingdom. He is giving us dreams, abilities, spiritual gifts, skills, opportunities, time, resources, fruit of the spirit, challenges and tests. Are we using these things? Embracing them? Developing them? Following God and listening to Him? When we do, the traits God has given us will grow and then He will give us more.

Abraham had been growing his faith for years. God knew He could give Abraham this very big test of his faith.

Abraham Obeys

Abraham woke up early and did what he had to do. Get the servants, donkey and cut the wood. And he got Isaac to go with him. Did God tell Abraham where to go? No, God gave Abraham a general direction, but not a specific direction and location. By faith Abraham started to move. God said He would direct Abraham’s steps.

God’s general, but not specific directions, required Abraham to exercise his faith yet again. Sometimes God gives us a general direction, but not a specific direction. So you shouldn’t just wait for the specific direction, but you should start moving in the general way God is calling you. You will find as you are moving God will give you the specific details you need. As we move we will find our faith is exercised and begins to grow stronger.

Abraham didn’t know exactly where he was going, but he had done this before. When he left his hometown for the first time he also didn’t know where he was going, but God showed him the way. Abraham now did the same thing he had learned years ago. Just follow God even without a specific detailed plan.

Has God given you a general direction for something, but you are still waiting for his specific direction? Maybe it is time to start walking in the general direction. What are the general directions He has already given you and how will you respond?

Three Days to Moriah

On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.” Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?” “Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.
Genesis‬ 22:4-8‬ NIV‬‬

God led Abraham to Moriah. But during the three-day walk I am sure Abraham was in much pain. And God knew Abraham’s pain because God was going to do the same thing with His own Son, Jesus. Isaac just followed along with his father, but eventually asked Abraham about the sacrifice since there was no lamb to sacrifice. Abraham gave a wonderful answer, “The Lord will provide.”

The Sacrifice
献祭

When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.” Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.”
Genesis‬ 22:9-14‬ NIV‬‬

I can imagine Isaac helped his father to build the altar and arrange the wood. He most likely had to have allowed Abraham to bind him and lay him on the altar. Isaac could have run away. He could have resisted his father. But he did not. He trusted Abraham and willingly lay his life down.

Jesus did the same thing when He died on the cross. He willingly lay Himself on the cross and gave up His life.

God’s Response

Just as Abraham reached for the knife God called to Abraham, “Abraham. Abraham.” What was Abraham’s response?

“Here I am.”

Same response. Always listening. Always responding. It is a wonderful trait Abraham had learned to listen to God’s voice and he had learned to obey. What if Abraham had missed God’s voice at this moment? What if he ignored God because he was so mad God was making him do this? Abraham had been practicing listening to God and obeying God so God could easily direct him.

What are ways you can respond like this to the Lord? How can you develop your ability to listen closely and quickly respond to God’s call. Is there anything hindering you?

God responds to Abraham’s obedience. God stops Abraham from sacrificing his son. God says He sees Abraham has the fear of the Lord which is holy respect, fear and reverence for God. When we fear the Lord we trust and obey Him completely. God sees Abraham will withhold nothing from God. Even his own son, even the son of the promise.

“By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, even though God had said to him, ‘It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.’ Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.”
Hebrews 11:17-19 NIV

The Substitute
替代物

After this dramatic moment Abraham looks up and sees the lamb in the thicket as a substitute for Isaac. The lamb to sacrifice. Jesus Christ is our lamb. He is the substitute for you and for me. The Lord provided the lamb: Jesus Christ.

The Promised Passed to Isaac

After Abraham sacrifices the ram God calls to Abraham again and He proclaims the promise one more time. And now Isaac hears it. Isaac sees his father’s faith, he hears God’s voice. The promise is now passed from Abraham to Isaac.

The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time and said, “I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.” Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.
Genesis‬ 22:15-19‬ NIV‬‬

The chapter ends with a strange addition of family genealogy. At first it doesn’t seem to fit in with this story. But then we read the end of the genealogy and we come to a very important name: Rebekah. The wife of Isaac. Through this woman the promise of God will continue through the family of Isaac.

Some time later Abraham was told, “Milkah is also a mother; she has borne sons to your brother Nahor: Uz the firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel (the father of Aram), Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel.” Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milkah bore these eight sons to Abraham’s brother Nahor. His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also had sons: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash and Maakah.
Genesis‬ 22:20-24‬ NIV‬‬

Abraham’s daily listening and following prepared him for the moment God called him to sacrifice and eventually God’s grand call on Abraham’s life to become a great nation. What you do today matters, it is a part of your preparation, your calling, your service. Ask for God’s gracious and loving help to daily follow in obedience to Him and may you one day hear your master say to you:

“Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!”
Matthew‬ 25:23‬ NIV‬‬
