This Spiritual Waimai is a part of a series entitled Mission Accomplished: the mission of Jesus Christ as told by Matthew and now lived out by you and me.
“If you just show me a sign, then I’ll believe.”
“If you just show me a sign, then I’ll know what to do.”
I’ve asked for signs before. And I’ve believed that God has sent me signs. Sometimes I interpreted the signs correctly. At other times I interpreted them incorrectly. Signs can be a tricky thing and I’ve learned to not put my faith only in signs. A sign can help point me in the right direction and encourage me, but when it comes to making big decisions or believing in God, merely a sign is not something strong enough to stand on.
What is stronger and more dependable than a sign?

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who give generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

Godly Counsel
Receiving advice from trusted mentors will help you discern God’s will for your life. We all need older, wiser, more mature Christians in our lives to help us find our way. I am so grateful for my Christian parents and Christian mentors. Who are mentors in your life that offer you godly counsel?
Victory is won through many advisers.

As you seek to follow God’s path for your life, He will open and close doors to guide you. Sometimes finding God’s will isn’t as tricky as it seems – look around, what opportunities are in front of you? What road blocks are you facing?
Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ.
Philippians 1:12-13 NIV弟兄们,我要你们知道,我所遭遇的事反而使福音更兴旺, 以致御营全军和其余的人都知道我是为基督的缘故受捆锁的;

God’s Peace
When making a decision do you still feel anxious? Or do you feel peace? When you haven’t felt peace about a decision, have you learned to pause and change course?
But the advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
John 14:26-27 NIV
If you are facing decisions big or small today, are you seeking God’s will? You have 5 wonderful resources in your hand: prayer, scriptures, godly counsel, circumstances and God’s peace. As you use these 5 resources, the Lord may also give you a sign. But a sign alone would be shaky ground to stand on.
The religious leaders asked Jesus for a sign to prove Himself. Their motivation was not that they wanted to know Him better, but they wanted to test Him. Their asking for a sign demonstrated that they did not have faith in Him. The person with no faith will say, “Prove it with a sign!”
The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven. He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Jesus then left them and went away.
Matthew 16:1-4 NIV
These religious leaders could interpret signs in the natural world such as predicting the weather. But they could not understand signs in the spiritual world. They were blind to spiritual things. Therefore, they tested Jesus with a sign.
We are not a wicked and adulterous generation. We are followers of Jesus. Therefore, we should look not just with natural eyes to the things going on around us, but we should also look with spiritual eyes. We can do that as we use the resources God has given us to know Him such as prayer, scriptures, godly counsel, circumstances and God’s peace.
After the conversation with the religious leaders, Jesus turned to His disciples.
When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. “Be careful,” Jesus said to them. “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” They discussed this among themselves and said, “It is because we didn’t bring any bread.” Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, “You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Jesus’ evaluation of the disciples was that they had little faith. They were stuck thinking about food – their basic needs. Even after they received so much miraculous food from Jesus! Their lack of faith caused them to focus on their earthy needs distracting them from the spiritual things Jesus was speaking to them.
Let’s look up from our earthly needs and trust God to provide for us and then turn our attention to His spiritual communication.
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
Colossians 3:1-2 NIV
How can you lift your eyes a little higher today to see what God is doing in your life and the world around you?
