Have you ever met a hypocrite?

你见过伪君子吗?

 

What does the phrase, “Do as I say, not as I do,” mean to you? One day Jesus gave the crowd some odd advice – to listen to teachers, obey them but not to do what they did.

“照我说的做,不要照我行的做”这句话你怎么理解?有一天,耶稣给了众人一个奇怪的建议——倾听拉比们的教导,遵行他们的训诲,但不要效法他们的行为。

Jesus had just been grilled by different religious leaders. After they tested Him on hot topics such as politics, religion and marriage, Jesus tested them and left them speechless. After this showdown, Jesus turned to His disciples and the crowd to guide them on how to handle these religious leaders in the future. He then spoke out what is commonly and ominously titled, “The Seven Woes.” These are seven hypocritical things that these religious leaders were all about that were going against the Kingdom of God.

耶稣刚刚被不同的宗教领袖考问过。在被他们从政治、宗教和婚姻等热点话题进行试问后,耶稣也提问了他们,他们却无言以对。在这次对决后,耶稣转向祂的门徒和众人,教导他们在未来如何应对这些宗教领袖。然后,祂说出了常被称作的“七祸”。是关于这些宗教领袖们的七件虚伪的事情,这些事情都是与Shen的国相悖的。

To the crowd: how to handle these hypocritical religious leaders?

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.”

那时,耶稣对众人和门徒讲论,说:“文士和法利赛人坐在摩西的位上,凡他们所吩咐你们的,你们都要谨守遵行。但不要效法他们的行为;因为他们能说,不能行。

Jesus respected the office of the religious leader and the authority that had been passed down to them. He honored the law and Moses. So He called the people to obey what these leaders told them. But in the next breath Jesus said, “Do not do what they do!” The people must be discerning to follow the law sent by God, but do not follow the lifestyle of these leaders who were self-focused. Jesus then detailed the lifestyle issues of the leaders.

耶稣尊重宗教领袖的职务,也尊重授予他们的权柄。他尊重律法和摩西。所以,他呼吁百姓遵从这些领袖的教导。但是接着,耶稣又说:“不要效法他们的行为。”民众需要有辨识能力,遵守神赐下的律法,但不要遵循这些以自我为中心的宗教领袖的生活方式。然后耶稣详细剖析了了这些领袖生活方式的问题。

Everything they do is done for people to see

Have you ever met someone who does everything for show? At first they may appear impressive. But upon closer look, there is an insincerity and fakeness that pops up. The person is self-focused and actions and words are driven by the need for acknowledgment. It’s like the Tik Tok star who shares videos about their life. At first the videos are natural but over time, the videos become more produced and the star’s life starts to be lived for the Tik Tok audience likes and views. The more popular they become, the more obsessed they are with the number of people watching. The focus of their life then shifts to what is seen on Tik Tok. Not reality.

你是否曾经见过什么人做一切事情都是为了作秀?起初,可能看起来引人瞩目。但细看下来,就会发现其中的伪善和虚假。这样的人以自我为中心,言行都是为了外界的认可需要所驱动。就像抖音上的网红分享他们的生活视频一样。一开始,这些视频很自然,但随着时间的推移,视频变得越来越刻意,网红的生活也变得像为了观众浏览和点赞而活。他们越受欢迎,他们就越痴迷于观看视频的人数。他们生活的焦点转向了在抖音上看起来怎么样,而不是现实本相。

The religious leaders were worse than self-absorbed Tik Tok stars. They also put heavy burdens on their followers to act a certain way and honor these teachers.

这些宗教领袖比无法自拔的抖音网红还要糟糕。他们也给追随者们施加了沉重负担,让他们的行为遵守律例,并且尊敬这些所谓的拉比。

“They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them. “Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others. “But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

The leaders were focused on positioning themselves in a high place and being acknowledged and respected by others. At this moment, Jesus repeated one of His most difficult teachings: if you want to be great, you must be a servant. If you want to be exalted, you first must go low and be humbled.

这些领袖热衷于让自己居高位,得到他人的认可和尊重。此时,耶稣重复了祂最困难的教导之一:如果你想为大,你必做仆人。如果你想升为高,你必先降为卑。

This is a warning to us all. How much do I enjoy praise and respect from others? Do I position myself in such a way that makes me look greater than I am? How can we be sure we do not fall in step with these hypocritical leaders? I think the answer is found in serving others. The way to become humble is not found in trying harder to be humble. The path to humility is found in service.

这是对我们所有人的一个告诫。我有多喜欢别人的赞扬和尊重呢?我是否把自己放在一个让我看起来比现在更伟大的位置呢?我怎么确定我不会重蹈这些虚伪领袖的覆辙呢?我认为答案就在服侍他人中。变得谦卑的方法并不是努力去变得谦卑。通往谦卑的道路就在于服侍。

The Seven Woes

“Woe” is an exclamation of grief, warning or denunciation. Jesus used this interjection when referring to unbelieving cities, those who cause others to stumble, the rich who depend on themselves, the one who would betray Christ and most commonly – Pharisees and teachers of the law. As you look at the seven woes, is there anything that could be a “woe” for you? Any warning that you should pay attention to?

“有祸了”是一种悲伤、警告或谴责的感叹。耶稣常在提到那些不信之城,那些使别人跌倒的人,那些只仰赖自己的富人时使用这种感叹,当然更常见的是提到法利赛人和文士。当你看到这七个祸时,有哪个是针对你的吗?有需要你留心的警告吗?

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell as you are. “Woe to you, blind guides! You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.’ You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred? You also say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gift on the altar is bound by that oath.’ You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? Therefore, anyone who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. And anyone who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it. And anyone who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness. “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous. And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets. Go ahead, then, and complete what your ancestors started! “You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell? Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town. And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. Truly I tell you, all this will come on this generation.”

你们这假冒为善的文士和法利赛人有祸了!因为你们正当人前,把天国的门关了,自己不进去,正要进去的人,你们也不容他们进去。(有古卷加:14有你们这假冒为善的文士和法利赛人有祸了!因为你们侵吞寡妇的家产,假意作很长的祷告,所以要受更重的刑罚。)你们这假冒为善的文士和法利赛人有祸了!因为你们走遍洋海陆地,勾引一个人入教,既入了教,却使他作地狱之子,比你们还加倍。你们这瞎眼领路的有祸了!你们说,‘凡指着殿起誓的,这算不得什么;只是凡指着殿中金子起誓的,他就该谨守。’ 你们这无知瞎眼的人哪,什么是大的?是金子呢?还是叫金子成圣的殿呢?你们又说,‘凡指着坛起誓的,这算不得什么;只是凡指着坛上礼物起誓的,他就该谨守。’ 你们这瞎眼的人哪,什么是大的?是礼物呢?还是叫礼物成圣的坛呢?所以,人指着坛起誓,就是指着坛和坛上一切所有的起誓;人指着殿起誓,就是指着殿和那住在殿里的起誓;人指着天起誓,就是指着神的宝座和那坐在上面的起誓。你们这假冒为善的文士和法利赛人有祸了!因为你们将薄荷、茴香、芹菜献上十分之一,那律法上更重的事,就是公义、怜悯、信实,反倒不行了。这更重的是你们当行的;那也是不可不行的。你们这瞎眼领路的,蠓虫你们就滤出来,骆驼你们倒吞下去。你们这假冒为善的文士和法利赛人有祸了!因为你们洗净杯盘的外面,里面却盛满了勒索和放荡。你这瞎眼的法利赛人,先洗净杯盘的里面,好叫外面也干净了。你们这假冒为善的文士和法利赛人有祸了!因为你们好像粉饰的坟墓,外面好看,里面却装满了死人的骨头和一切的污秽。你们也是如此,在人前,外面显出公义来,里面却装满了假善和不法的事。你们这假冒为善的文士和法利赛人有祸了!因为你们建造先知的坟,修饰义人的墓,说:‘若是我们在我们祖宗的时候,必不和他们同流先知的血。’这就是你们自己证明是杀害先知者的子孙了。你们去充满你们祖宗的恶贯吧!你们这些蛇类、毒蛇之种啊,怎能逃脱地狱的刑罚呢?所以我差遣先知和智慧人并文士到你们这里来,有的你们要杀害,要钉十字架;有的你们要在会堂里鞭打,从这城追逼到那城,叫世上所流义人的血都归到你们身上,从义人亚伯的血起,直到你们在殿和坛中间所杀的巴拉加的儿子撒迦利亚的血为止。我实在告诉你们,这一切的罪都要归到这世代了。

Let’s take a look at each of the seven woes. Do they offer us a warning as well?
让我们分别来看看这七个祸,是否也是给我们的警告?

  1. You shut the kingdom of heaven on people’s faces
    The leaders were exclusive and put themselves in a position of deciding who could come into God’s kingdom. Have I ever excluded someone or decided they were not worthy of God’s grace and love?

    你们 把天国的门在人面前关闭了
    那些宗教领袖们是排外的,他们让自己来决定谁能进入神的国度。那么我是否曾经排斥某人,或者认为他们不配得到神的恩典和爱呢?

 

  1. You make converts to follow yourselves, leading them away from God
    They worked hard at making disciples, but disciples going in the wrong direction. When I share the good news with others, am I leading them to follow Jesus or follow me?
    你们勾引人入教,却带他们远离神
    他们努力培养门徒,但门徒却走向了错误的方向。当我和别人分享福音时,我是引导他们跟随耶稣还是跟随我?

 

  1. You make oaths that could be broken
    They seemed to make up ridiculous rules about what oaths were valid and what oaths were not. Were they giving themselves the opportunity to break their oath? Have I said things and then later came back and said, “Well, I really didn’t mean it that way…” just to make an excuse for myself?

    你们许下可以违背的誓言
    他们似乎编造了关于什么誓言是有效的,什么誓言无效的荒谬规则。他们给自己违背誓言留下了机会吗?我是否说过一些话,后来却又改口称:“我其实不是这个意思……”,只是为了给自己找个借口?

 

  1. You neglect justice, mercy, faithfulness
    The religious leaders were emphatic about following tiny rules. But when it came to the large and hard commands to be just, merciful and faithful, they paid no attention. Do I spend time on the small easy tasks of appearing holy while ignoring lifting up justice for others, extending mercy and acting in faithfulness to God?

    你们忽视了公义、仁慈和信实
    这些宗教领袖们强调遵守一些细微的规则。但是当涉及到公义、仁慈和信实这样大而难的诫命时,他们却不在意。我是否花时间在一些容易让我显得圣洁的小事上,而忽视为他人伸张正义,施行怜悯并在行为上对神信实?

 

  1. You are clean on the outside but dirty with greed and self-indulgence on the inside
    The outside of the cup was beautiful and shiny. All who saw the leaders thought they looked great and were holy. But what was most important – the inner-self – was dirty. Do I appear to be following Jesus on the outside, yet my heart is far from Him?

    你表面干净,里面却是贪婪和自我放纵
    杯子的外面美观闪亮。所有看见领袖的人都认为他们看起来很伟大,也很圣洁。但最重要的内心却是肮脏的。我是否外面看着像在跟从Ye Su,但是内心却远离他?

 

  1. You look alive on the outside but you are dead on the inside
    The leaders put a fake cover over the deadness in their heart. Am I using enthusiasm, friendliness, religious words and actions to cover up a deadness in my heart?
    你外表看起来活着,内心却死了
    领袖们用虚假的外表遮盖内心的死亡。我是否用热情、友好、虔诚的话语和行为来掩盖我内心的死亡?

 

  1. You claim you would not murder the prophets like your ancestors, but then admit the guilt of killing prophets
    The religious leaders acknowledged the guilt of their ancestors who murdered the prophets, yet they did not repent of their own murderous intentions towards Jesus. Do I look at the guilt of others and shake my head at them yet harbor the same guilt in my heart with no repentance?

    你声称不会像祖先那样谋杀先知,但是同样犯下杀害先知的罪行
    宗教领袖们承认了他们的祖先谋杀了先知的罪行,但他们并不承认自己谋杀Ye Su的意图。我是否只看到别人的罪,却对自己同样的罪视而不见?

Gathering the chicks
聚集小鸡

After speaking out this list of woes, Jesus turned His eyes and heart to the entire city of Jerusalem and expressed His longing for all of Jerusalem to follow Him. He wasn’t blasting the religious leaders to condemn them. He really was longing to gather them together under His protection and offer them the gift of salvation the prophets had foretold for hundreds of years.

在说出了这些祸之后,Ye Su把祂的眼睛和心转向了整个耶路撒冷城,并表达了祂希望整个耶路撒冷都跟随祂的渴望。祂抨击宗教领袖并不是为了定他们的罪。祂真的渴望把他们聚集在他的保护下,把先知们数百年来预言的救恩赐给他们。

“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. Look, your house is left to you desolate. For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

耶路撒冷啊,耶路撒冷啊,你常杀害先知,又用石头打死那奉差遣到你这里来的人。我多次愿意聚集你的儿女,好像母鸡把小鸡聚集在翅膀底下,只是你们不愿意。看哪,你们的家成为荒场留给你们。我告诉你们,从今以后,你们不得再见我,直等到你们说:‘奉主名来的是应当称颂的。’”

马太福音23章37-39节

The pride and hypocrisy of the religious leaders left them outside of the gathering Jesus longed for. Instead of being gathered together, these religious leaders were separated into their religious factions and totally rejected Jesus Christ.

宗教领袖们的骄傲和虚伪使他们离开了耶稣所渴望的合一。这些宗教领袖没有聚合在一起,而是被分散到了他们自己的宗派里面,并完全拒绝了耶稣基督。

Let us check our hearts to see if there is any prideful or hypocritical way in us. Let us humbly and sincerely come to Jesus and remember that to be great in God’s Kingdom, we must become the servant of all.

让我们检查自己的内心,看看是否有骄傲或虚伪的地方。让我们谦卑而真诚地来到耶稣面前,并且记住要在神的国度里为大,我们必须成为所有人的仆人。
