Joseph used his position to glorify God, how are you glorifying God in your position?
Purposeful Prison Life
Joseph’s life in prison immediately becomes purposeful and we see in this chapter how God is developing excellent character in Joseph which will prepare him for the important days ahead.
Some time later, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their master, the king of Egypt. Pharaoh was angry with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker, and put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the same prison where Joseph was confined. The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he attended them. After they had been in custody for some time, each of the two men—the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were being held in prison—had a dream the same night, and each dream had a meaning of its own. When Joseph came to them the next morning, he saw that they were dejected. So he asked Pharaoh’s officials who were in custody with him in his master’s house, “Why do you look so sad today?” “We both had dreams,” they answered, “but there is no one to interpret them.” Then Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.” So the chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream. He said to him, “In my dream I saw a vine in front of me, and on the vine were three branches. As soon as it budded, it blossomed, and its clusters ripened into grapes. Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh’s cup and put the cup in his hand.” “This is what it means,” Joseph said to him. “The three branches are three days. Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your position, and you will put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand, just as you used to do when you were his cupbearer. But when all goes well with you, remember me and show me kindness; mention me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison. I was forcibly carried off from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing to deserve being put in a dungeon.” When the chief baker saw that Joseph had given a favorable interpretation, he said to Joseph, “I too had a dream: On my head were three baskets of bread. In the top basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head.” “This is what it means,” Joseph said. “The three baskets are three days. Within three days Pharaoh will lift off your head and impale your body on a pole. And the birds will eat away your flesh.” Now the third day was Pharaoh’s birthday, and he gave a feast for all his officials. He lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker in the presence of his officials: He restored the chief cupbearer to his position, so that he once again put the cup into Pharaoh’s hand— but he impaled the chief baker, just as Joseph had said to them in his interpretation. The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.
Genesis 40:1-23 NIV
Joseph’s Authority
In Joseph’s new job of overseeing the prison he is responsible for officials. Several times in this passage we hear the word “officials.” Obviously the cupbearer and baker were no ordinary prisoners, no ordinary workers. They were high-level people. These very high-level people are under Joseph’s authority. Why? The captain of the guard observed God was with Joseph in everything he did. Because of this, Joseph was given authority. Joseph did not seek this place of authority; it was given to him.
In the world, authority means power, wealth, being the boss, being the top person. Authority in the world is often used selfishly. In Joseph’s situation and in the Bible, authority is used in a different way. Authority is having a place of influence – not for your own gain, but for the benefit of others and the glory of God. Biblical authority is not chased after as it is in the world. It is given by God to the one who will submit to God’s authority.
Joseph used his authority to bless those in prison – his master and the other prisoners. He did not use his authority to give himself a better life in prison. Because he had authority the other prisoners listened to him. His authority gave him influence.
Do you know anyone who has authority and uses it to bless others? How does that person have a positive influence on the people around them?
Joseph’s Sensitivity
Joseph sees the cupbearer and baker are sad. He doesn’t ignore them. He doesn’t stay busy with his life and walk by. He stops, he notices, he asks. Because he cared he was able to influence their lives. If he was not sensitive, he would have gone on with his day. But because he took the time to stop, notice, care and speak to these men, he was able to use his gifts in their lives and years later it would be a blessing to Joseph.
Joseph’s Gifts
Last chapter we saw Joseph had the gift of administration, so Potiphar put Joseph in charge of everything. The leader of the prison also put Joseph in charge of everything. Joseph had a gift and he was using his gift to bless others. At this moment we see one more of Joseph’s gifts: dream interpretation. He did not shy away from using his gift. He had confidence and shared his gift with others.
God’s Glory
Joseph does not take credit for interpreting the dreams. He clearly states God provided understanding. Joseph does not have any natural ability or deep understanding. He relies on God to decipher the dreams. This is once again the key to Joseph’s success: God is with him. And Joseph gives all glory to God. He doesn’t say, “No problem. I can understand your dream.” He clearly points to God.
Joseph’s Suffering
At the end of this chapter we have a little window into Joseph’s heart when he references his two points of suffering. Even though Joseph is super successful, he is still suffering and this is always in front of him. He is very aware of the pain in his life and he would like the suffering to end.
Joseph Was Forgotten
Even though he helped the cupbearer and it was obvious Joseph was a special person, he was totally forgotten for two years. He continues to wait in obscurity. Even though he is a man with authority, giftings and God’s presence, no one knows about him. He is forgotten in a dungeon.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’”
Matthew 28:18-20 NIV
Jesus’ Sensitivity

I may be forgotten and must wait.
我可能会被遗忘且须等待;
My Authority As I Submit To The Lordship Of Jesus
In order to walk with God’s authority, we must first submit to His Lordship. Some people receive Jesus as their Savior – the one who forgives and loves – but they do not then take the next step of making Jesus their Lord submitting their lives to Him. Have you submitted your entire life to Jesus? Do you follow Him? As you submit to Him, He will give you a place of authority, a place of influence.
“Jesus called His twelve disciples to Him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.”
Matthew 10:1 NIV
Jesus Christ lives in me and I am submitted to Him. The amount of authority I carry from Jesus is in proportion to my submission to Him. And I can use this authority to influence the world for Jesus.
Have you submitted your life to the Lordship of Christ? Do you carry His authority?
I Will Be Sensitive To Others
With this authority, I must have Jesus’ compassionate eyes for the world. Am I looking for those who are hurting, sick, in need of hope? Am I stopping to reach out to them with the love and power of Christ?
“Carry each another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
Galatians 6:2 NIV
I Will Use My Giftings
God will give gifts to His children. There are many different gifts: teaching, giving, hospitality, administration, mercy, prophecy, etc. There are gifts for everyone.
“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.”
Romans 12:6-8 NIV
Do you know what your God-given gifts are?
I Will Give Glory to God
We should never take the glory ourselves, but our life should point people to the Lord.
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Matthew 5:14-16 NIV
I Will Suffer
Jesus told us there will be suffering in this world, we should not be shocked when it comes. We can be encouraged that our suffering will transform us.
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
James 1:2-4 NIV
I May Be Forgotten and Must Wait
Waiting. This is common to all believers. Many of us are waiting. Waiting for jobs, spouses, children, ministry opportunity. Waiting for restored relationships, transformation in our own lives. Waiting is a part of our life of faith. Do not waste the waiting time – it is precious. Wait on the Lord and He will renew your strength. In waiting we receive a gift.
“ … but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
Isaiah 40:31 NIV
Am I willing to wait and be forgotten for the Lord? Joseph could have used his authority and gifts to get himself out of prison. He had influence. But he did not make it happen. He waited and served others in his waiting time.
Are you in a time of suffering or waiting? What is the Lord teaching you during this precious time?
If you find yourself in a waiting time today or suffering, let us learn from Joseph. There is much we can do now to serve and bring glory to God as we wait on Him.
