How can you help the children in your life become doers of the Word and not just hearers?

Making disciples through participation and partnership

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Matthew‬ 28:19-20‬ NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

As we serve kids, we welcome children to become disciples of Jesus. They are not students who sit quietly and listen to their leader’s instruction. They are children who will actively participate in our lessons and club so that they can become doers of the Word of God, not just hearers. When we do, we learn!

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.
James‬ 1:22-25‬ NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

We are inviting children to join us in following Jesus. Jesus did this by inviting his disciples to participate with him in his ministry and actually become partners. The disciples did not only learn from Jesus by listening to him and observing him, they learned by doing the work that Jesus was doing. They watched him model, then they worked side by side with him and he supported them and finally he empowered them to go out and serve on their own.

Examples of Jesus the Master Teacher

Jesus used a combination of directly teaching His disciples and modeling for them His teaching, inviting them to serve alongside Him and empowering them to serve independently.

1. Lecture-style teaching and modeling

  • Sermon on the Mount: The Beatitudes

  • Storytelling: Parable of the Lost Sheep

  • Modeling care: Healed people

  • One-on-one meetings: Nicodemus and the Woman at the Well

  • Follow up questions to check for understanding: Who was the neighbor in the Good Samaritan story?

2. Invitation to participate with support

  • Asked disciples to provide food for 5000 and had them hand out the food and gather leftovers

  • Brought three of the disciples to the room of the dead girl to witness her healing

  • Went to the mountain top with three disciples to witness the transfiguration

3. Empowered to independently serve

  • Sent them out two by two to practice and report back

  • Gave them the Great Commission to change the world

All ages and levels can become disciples of Jesus

Jesus took everyone seriously wherever they were at. No one had to wait until they grew up to get closer to Jesus. Jesus met tax collectors and pharisees but just gave them little by little teaching. He went deeper with Nicodemus who had an eagerness to learn more. When Jesus went to Zacchaeus’ home, Zacchaeus was ready to make a greater commitment. Jesus talked to the woman at the well about her personal life and answered her questions. He took Peter, James and John to the mountain with Him to witness the transfiguration but told them not to tell others. He met each person where they were at and gave them what they were able to receive from Him. No one is too young, too immature, too sinful, too lost to become a disciple of Jesus.

As leaders we will follow Jesus model of welcoming our children as disciples of Jesus Christ. We do not want to just tell them about the life of Jesus, we want them to become active participants and partners with us as we all follow Jesus together.

Engage the Body – Mind – Spirit

As leaders, we strive to have as high a level of participation as possible in all of our activities and lessons. The leader should not just be a “show” that our kids watch, but our leader should be inviting our kids into the action. A goal to aim for is reaching 100% participation in every activity.

What will the children do to participate in your teaching?

Listening 聆听

Listening is one of the most common ways children participate in the learning process. It is important for children to learn to listen to the leader. How can you know if the children are listening? The leader should take the time to make eye contact with each child. Observe their body language, are they receiving what you are sharing?

Moving 移动

Children love to move! Both big movements with their whole bodies and small movements with their hands and arms will help children to learn. As you tell the Bible story, you can use hand motions and ask the children to follow your motions.

Speaking and Thinking

Children will learn as they respond to the leader verbally and also when they communicate with one another. What questions can you ask to give the children an opportunity to speak?

1. Knowledge Questions “What happened?”

“What did the father give the son when he returned home?” A ring, new shoes, a lamb…

‘Who can recite the Bible verse?”

These questions help the children to think about what happened in the Bible story. They are the first level of thinking about the contents of God’s Word. As a leader you can use these questions to check for understanding of the stories and Bible verses you are teaching.

2. Comprehension Questions “What does it mean?”

“Tell us in your own words what you think this means?”

“Who can give a summary of the story?”

When the leader asks questions such as “Why?” And “What does this mean?” it will lead children to consider the deeper meaning of the stories they are learning.

3. Application Questions “What does this mean to me?”

“How can you love your neighbor this week?”

“When you have disobeyed your parents, what should you do?”

Ultimately, we want to guide our children to apply what they have learned from the Bible to their daily lives. As you teach God’s Word, look for ways to link the biblical concepts to our children’s own reality. In this stage of learning, our children will learn how to make decisions for themselves based on the Bible, they will become doers of the Word!

Serving 服事

Even young children can find ways to serve others. Experiences of serving will give children the opportunity to do the things they are learning from the Bible. How can our children serve? Can they help the leader, share with friends, welcome someone who is feeling nervous to join in or comfort someone who is feeling sad?

Step-by-step instruction leading to participation: I do-we do-you do

To help our young children participate in all of our activities, as leaders we can use three simple steps to guide our children to know how to join in.

1. I do: modeling (the leader and assistant model the activity)

Before we ask our children to jump into our activity, we need to model for them what we would like them to do. If we are going to play a game, first we model the game. If we are going to act out a story, first we model how to act it out. The leader and assistant can work together and even ask one child to be an example for the others.

2. We do: support (the leader and assistant help the child to do the activity together)

Once the leader models what the children are to do, the leader and assistant can come alongside the child to support them. If they are putting a puzzle together, the leader may come next to the child and help them with the first few pieces.

3. You do: empower (the children are able to do the activity on their own)

After the children have seen the activity modeled and tried it with the support of their leader, then they are ready to work independently. The leader should always be looking for ways to empower the children to be as independent as possible.

Spiritual participation

Our children can learn to read their Bibles, pray, obey and follow God and even to listen to God’s voice at an early age. They have a special gift of faith, so let us teach them to grow spiritually. We can ask our children to pray, think about spiritual things, memorize Bible verses and even obey and ask for forgiveness. God will lead our children and even speak to them. Let us give them an opportunity to engage in learning on a spiritual level.

As we teach our children God’s Word, let us always have the goal in mind of making disciples. We can lead our kids to not just be hearers of the Word but also doers of the Word as we welcome them to actively participate in putting God’s Word in their hearts.
