What would you wear to a royal wedding?

 

As the days drew closer and closer to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, the tension among the highly religious community rose. Each Jewish religious group became increasingly intent on snaring Jesus in His words. The controversial issues they deployed to trap Him are still the hot topics of today that divide: politics, sex and religion. Three different factions tried their hand at nailing Jesus, but all of their schemes backfired.

Ye Su Ji Du被钉十字架的日子渐近,宗教团体高层之间的紧张局势有所升温。每个犹太宗教团体都愈发想就着Ye Su的话陷害衪。他们设陷Ye Su的这些极具争议的问题至今仍是热门话题:政治、性和宗教。三个不同的派系都试图想要揪住Ye Su的把柄,但他们的全部诡计却都适得其反。

Team A: Pharisees and Herodians questioning politics
A组:法利赛人和希律党质疑政治

The Pharisees were nationalists who adamantly opposed the occupying Roman rule. They hated the Herodians who as their name indicates – were Jews who politically supported the Roman ruler Herod. These two groups formed an unconventional political alliance in order to take down Jesus. Their plan was to force Jesus to either be exposed as anti-tax and anti-government or denounced as disloyal to the Jewish nation. The collusion between the two formerly rival opponents would surely result in destroying Jesus. They began with flattery to put Jesus off His game and then tested Him.

Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are. Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?” But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They brought him a denarius, and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?” “Caesar’s,” they replied. Then he said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.” When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away. Matthew 22:15-22 NIV

Jesus expertly shifted the focus off of a political controversy and on to the greatness of God. The denarius was a coin that bore the head of Tiberius Caesar Augustus on one side and the inscription on the back read, “Tiberius Caesar Augustus, son of the divine Augustus.” It was Roman belief that Caesar was a god. In Jesus’ reply, He clearly drew the line between Caesar and God. Jesus didn’t answer as the Pharisees and Herodians had hoped. He looked beyond Caesar’s worldly greatness to God’s much higher greatness. Give Caesar this small tax, give God everything else.

Politics are important, but they are not the most important thing. Jesus calls us to be good citizens and to look higher than our earthly leaders to the God who holds the nations in His hand.

政治很重要,但并不是最重要的。Ye Su呼召我们要做个好公民,要比属世的领袖更加高瞻远瞩,仰视那位手握列国的Shen。

Team B: Sadducees questioning marriage
B组:撒都该人质疑婚姻

Next came the Sadducees. Another Jewish sect. They did not believe in life after death. So they tried not only trap Jesus but also prove their own unique religious view. They brought up a story of a widow and seven unlucky brothers and then threw their question at Him.

接着是撒都该人。他们是另一个犹太教派,并不相信复活。因此,他们不仅试图陷害Ye Su,还想证明自己独特的宗教观点。他们讲到一个故事,有关一个寡妇和七个不幸的兄弟,然后把问题抛给了Ye Su。

That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. “Teacher,” they said, “Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for him. Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother. The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh. Finally, the woman died. Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?” Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.” When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.

撒都该人常说没有复活的事。那天,他们来问Ye Su说:“夫子,摩西说:‘人若死了,没有孩子,他兄弟当娶他的妻,为哥哥生子立后。’从前,在我们这里有弟兄七人。第一个娶了妻,死了,没有孩子,撇下妻子给兄弟。第二、第三,直到第七个,都是如此。末后,妇人也死了。这样,当复活的时候,她是七个人中哪一个的妻子呢?因为他们都娶过她。”Ye Su回答说:“你们错了,因为不明白圣经,也不晓得 Shen的大能。当复活的时候,人也不娶,也不嫁,乃像天上的使者一样。论到死人复活, Shen在经上向你们所说的,你们没有念过吗?他说:‘我是亚伯拉罕的 Shen,以撒的 Shen,雅各的 Shen。’ Shen不是死人的 Shen,乃是活人的 Shen。” 众人听见这话,就希奇他的教训。 马太福音22:23-33

These guys started off quoting the lawgiver Moses as their proof. But as soon as they were finished speaking Jesus called out their error and their misunderstanding of the scriptures and God’s power. They were twisting Moses’ words to back up their argument. Jesus corrected their wrong belief about life after death (there would be more to come in the next life!) and He disproved their argument about the widow and brothers by telling them with authority that there would be no marriage in the next life.

这些人一开始引用了立法者摩西的话作为证据。但他们话音刚落,Ye Su就指出他们的错误,以及对经文和Shen大能的误解。他们歪曲摩西的话来支持他们的论点。Ye Su纠正了他们对死后生命的错误信念(复活后的生命会有更多的意义),凭权柄告诉他们复活后不会有婚姻,驳斥了他们关于寡妇和兄弟的争论。

What do we learn from Jesus’ response? Don’t think about God’s Kingdom in earthly terms. Don’t make the scripture say something it doesn’t say and most importantly – our God is a living God!

我们从Ye Su的回应中学到了什么?学到了不要从世俗的角度去思考Shen国的事。不要衍生出经文里没有说过的话,最重要的是——我们的Shen是又真又活的Shen!

Team C: Pharisees and Expert of the Law questioning religion
C组:法利赛人和律法师质疑宗教

This team really had a lot of moxy to question the One who was the Word, about the Word. Jesus deftly shot down their devious questioning with the power of love.

这一组里有勇气去质疑那位”我是道”的大有人在,关于道,Ye Su用爱的力量巧妙地驳倒了他们狡猾的提问。

Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

法利赛人听见Ye Su堵住了撒都该人的口,他们就聚集。内中有一个人是律法师,要试探Ye Su,就问他说:“夫子,律法上的诫命,哪一条是最大的呢?”Ye Su对他说:“你要尽心、尽性、尽意爱主-你的 Shen。这是诫命中的第一,且是最大的。其次也相仿,就是要爱人如己。这两条诫命是律法和先知一切道理的总纲。” 马太福音22:34-40

There were hundreds of laws that religious Jews were constantly picking a part, redefining and categorizing. Jesus easily blasted their questioning by quoting what is in modern times referred to as the “Watchwords of Israel”.

热衷宗教的犹太人可以在成百上千条律法中不断地挑选,重新定义和分类。Ye Su轻而易举地引用了现代所谓的“以色列的口号”来抨击他们的提问。‬‬

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” Deuteronomy 6:4-5 NIV

He added a quote from Leviticus:

衪在利未记里也加了一句:

“Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.” Leviticus 19:18 NIV

不可报仇,也不可埋怨你本国的子民,却要爱人如己。我是耶和华。 利未记19:18

Loving God, loving others. If we do this, we have completed all that God calls us to do. It sounds simple, but it is incredibly difficult. If you look at your life through this lens of loving God and loving others, how are you doing? Do you do everything in love?

要爱Shen,爱人。我们若这样行,Shen所召我们作的一切事,我们就都成全了。这听起来很简单做起来却很难。如果以爱Shen和爱人的眼光来看待你的生活,你做得怎么样?你做任何事都带着爱吗?

Jesus’ turn
轮到Ye Su提问了

After silencing these teams, Jesus takes a turn and questions them on the identity of the Messiah.

堵住这些人的口之后,Ye Su转身问他们有关弥赛亚的身份。

While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?” “The son of David,” they replied. He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says, “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.” ’ If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.
Matthew 22:41-46 NIV

法利赛人聚集的时候,Ye Su问他们说:“论到Ji Du,你们的意见如何?他是谁的子孙呢?”他们回答说:“是大卫的子孙。”Ye Su说:“这样,大卫被圣灵感动,怎么还称他为主,说:‘主对我主说:你坐在我的右边,等我把你仇敌放在你的脚下。’大卫既称他为主,他怎么又是大卫的子孙呢?”他们没有一个人能回答一言。从那日以后也没有人敢再问他什么。 马太福音22:41-46

This challenged the Pharisees’ thinking. Did they really understand who the Messiah was? Jesus Christ is the Messiah. He is both the Son of David and the Son of God. Fully man, fully God. Because of this, David could call his own son, “Lord”. The Pharisees did not grasp the dual nature of the Messiah – God and man. And at this moment, they were silenced.

这挑战了法利赛人的想法。他们真的知道弥赛亚是谁吗? Ye Su Ji Du就是弥赛亚。衪既是大卫的儿子,又是Shen的儿子。是完全的人,也是完全的Shen。因此,大卫可以称自己的儿子为“主”。法利赛人没有领会弥赛亚的Shen人共性。就在这时,他们沉默了。

Humble and loving ways
谦卑和爱的方式

These religious leaders thought they had all the answers and a complete understanding of the scriptures. They were quickly schooled by Jesus. Their pride and arrogance blocked them from receiving teaching from Jesus. Instead they were stunned by Him.

这些宗教领袖们自认为知道所有的答案,完全理解圣经。他们很快就被Ye Su教育了一顿。他们的骄傲和傲慢阻止他们领受Ye Su的教导。反而被衪震惊了。

The examination of the Passover lamb
逾越节羔羊的测试

This testing Jesus underwent was in the midst of the nation-wide Passover celebration. Central to the celebration was the killing of the Passover lamb. Each family was to choose a lamb, observing it for days to ensure it had no blemish. Once it was determined the lamb was without defect, it could be sacrificed as the Passover lamb.

就在举国欢庆逾越节的时候Ye Su受到了这个试探。庆祝活动的中心是宰杀逾越节的羊羔。每个家庭都要挑选一只羊羔,观察好几天,以确保它没有瑕疵。一旦确定羊羔没有缺陷,就可以作为逾越节的羊羔献祭。

Jesus Christ was days away from His crucifixion where He would fulfill His destiny to become the Passover lamb who takes away the sin of the world. As the Pharisees tested and observed Him, they could find no blemish, no defect in Him. He truly was the perfect Passover lamb.

Ye Su Ji Du几天后就要被钉十字架,衪要完成衪的使命,成为那只逾越节的羔羊,带走这个世界的罪。法利赛人试探衪观察衪,就会发现衪无可指摘、毫无瑕疵。衪真的是逾越节最完美的羔羊。

“He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
