Are you willing to give up control of your life to God? When Abram gave up control to God, he gained more than he could have imagined.

Returning to God

In Chapter 12 Abram had gotten off track when he ran to Egypt to save his life from the famine which ended up being a disaster. He lost his wife to Pharaoh and Pharaoh’s household contracted a serious disease on account of Sarai. Finally, Pharaoh kicked Abram out of Egypt. Abram’s family life was probably not so great at this moment.
But as a result of his forced deportation Abram got back on track. He headed back to where he had come from, the Negev. Then he went place to place until he came to Bethel.
So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, with his wife and everything he had, and Lot went with him. Abram had become very wealthy in livestock and in silver and gold. From the Negev he went from place to place until he came to Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been earlier and where he had first built an altar. There Abram called on the name of the Lord.
Genesis 13:1-4 NIV
Here Abram calls on the Lord. He is now doing things right. Abram comes to God. But things don’t immediately get better. In fact there are still some family problems.
Abram vs Lot

Abram and Lot were both very wealthy which didn’t mean they had a big bank account or property. It meant they had gold, silver and animals. Lots of animals. Animals require a lot of space, grass and water. Abram’s herdsmen started to argue with Lot’s herdsmen.  Abram is facing a business problem with his own nephew.
Now Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together. And quarreling arose between Abram’s herders and Lot’s. The Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land at that time. So Abram said to Lot, “Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives. Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.”
Genesis 13:5-9 NIV
Abram desires to be at peace with Lot so Abram decides to separate. Sometimes this is the most peaceful solution to strife. Abram knew separating was not a bad decision. Lot needed space and so did Abram. The decision could keep the peace. And let’s note: before Abram started on this journey God told him to leave his family behind. But Lot came with Abram. Maybe now Abram is really getting on track with God.
In this relationship Abram is the elder. The decision maker. Yet at this moment he does something curious. When it is time to separate, he lets Lot decide where he would like to go. Abram lets go of the control. He puts the decision in Lot’s hand – and truly God’s hand. He had learned from his mistake in Egypt where he tried to control the situation. Now he has totally let go of control.
Sometimes a difficult lesson like Abram’s ill-fated trip to Egypt teaches us to let go of control. Have you ever had a time in your life where you learned to surrender control to God?

Lot Makes His Move
Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.
Genesis 13:10-13 NIV
What is the result? Lot chooses the greenest land. The land looks the best, the most profitable. But at a price. He will move next to Sodom which was known to be full of wicked people. Lot makes a choice based on economics. NOT on family, morals or godliness. He chooses a place which will benefit him economically but puts himself in a community full of wickedness. We know later he actually moves to Sodom and joins this wicked community.

Who Wins? Who Loses?
At first Lot’s decision looks like a big win for him and his herdsmen. They got what they wanted.  More land and the best land. And Abram’s decision looks like a huge loss. He gives up the good land to his nephew.  It appears that Abram is the loser here.

Lift Up Your Eyes To The Promise
The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever. I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted. Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you.” So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the Lord.
Genesis 13:14-18 NIV
But in this difficult moment God speaks to Abram and this is worth more than all of the money in the world. God makes Abram another promise. He tells Abram, “LIFT UP YOUR EYES.” Look North, South, East, West. ALL of the land will be given to Abram and his descendants. And his offspring would be so many no one could count them. God says walk around, see this land I am giving you.
