How can we know when Jesus will return?

If you knew for a fact that Jesus was going to return in your lifetime, would it affect the way you were living your life?

I have a friend named Neal who is often looking forward to Jesus’ return. Especially around Easter time. This year he messaged me:

“I know this is crazy… but how cool would be if He came back on Easter? It would be so perfect! Just saying. I’m so ready. I look up into the clouds all the time and imagine what it would look like. All of a sudden there would be all of these figures appearing in the clouds… thousands of them … then a trumpet would sound… and He would appear… That is the truth.”

Have you considered the fact of Jesus’ return? Do you ever imagine it happening in your lifetime? If you knew when He was coming, how would you prepare? The truth is, whether we are alive or not when it happens, we will see it with our own eyes.

Ever since the time of the disciples, people have been looking up into the sky like Neal. It has been almost 2000 years since Jesus ascended to heaven and we are still waiting and watching. Before Jesus’ death on the cross, He gave His disciples and all of us some signs of when He will return. He also gave us some warning and instructions. He clearly stated that no one will know when the exact date of His return will be but that He will return.

Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”
Matthew 24:1-3 NIV

In Matthew 24, Jesus gives His disciples and us some clear signs of what will happen before His return. He also gives us some warnings and instructions. As we study this chapter, let’s answer these questions:

What are the signs of Jesus’ soon return?
What are the warnings for us all?
What are the instructions He has given ?
Am I aware of the signs, alert to the warnings and obedient to the instructions?

Do not be deceived, watch for world events and finish well

Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains. Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.”
Matthew 24:4-14 NIV

In this time period, many terrible things will occur. False messiahs, wars, earthquakes, persecution, wickedness, decrease of love, false prophets, falling away from the faith. In this kind of environment, can we make it? Jesus encourages us that we can! We can be faithful to the end.

A few years ago one of my mentors said to me, “I just want to be faithful to the end.” At the time when she said it, I thought, “Really, that’s it?” But over the years I have seen the devastation of not finishing well. You can start strong but you have also got to finish strong. Perseverance is necessary. Stand firm to the end!

And when will the end come? One of the best predictors of Christ’s return is the spreading of the gospel. Jesus said He would not return until all of the nations of the earth heard the Good News.

Time of distress

“So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’ spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let no one on the housetop go down to take anything out of the house. Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again. “If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened. At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. See, I have told you ahead of time. “So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather. Immediately after the distress of those days, ‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’”
Matthew 24:16-29 NIV

There will be a time of great distress before Jesus returns. There will be a desecration of the temple and false messiahs will rise up. Jesus warns us again to not be deceived. Let’s learn now how to endure hardships so when greater hardship comes, we will stay strong with Christ. And the closer we get to Jesus today, the easier it will be to identify a false messiah!

The return of Christ

“Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.”
Matthew 24:30-31 NIV

Why will there be mourning at this glorious moment? Maybe those who rejected Him will mourn their foolish rejection of the true Messiah. Those who are “the elect” will be gathered. Are you secure in your position as one of “the elect”? The elect are those who have received the gift of salvation and have been received by the God the Father as one of His children washed clean by the blood of Jesus. Have you looked up into the sky lately to look for His return?

Watch the signs but no one knows when this will happen

“Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.”
Matthew 24:32-41 NIV

Though we do not know when this will happen, we should be ready and not taken by surprise.

Be ready
预备好

“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns. Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’ and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards. The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
Matthew 24:42-51 NIV

There are two kinds of servants in Jesus’ parable: the faithful and wise servant and the wicked servant. The faithful and wise servant does not stop serving others even when the master is away. The wicked one has given up on the master’s return and is selfishly serving his own pleasures. The faithful and wise servant will be rewarded with greater responsibility. The wicked servant will be punished and removed.

What kind of a servant are you? How are you serving those in the household? Are you diligently serving, or have you given up and turned to your own desires? Let’s continue to remind ourselves and others that Christ will return and stay vigilant to do all He has called us to do in His kingdom.

The signs, the warnings and instructions

We are still in the waiting period. But every year that passes brings us closer and closer to that great and glorious day. The signs are wars, earthquakes, increased wickedness, false prophets and messiahs. But these signs are just the beginning. While we wait, we should intentionally consider Jesus’ warning and instruction.

Guard your mind and heart against false prophets and messiahs. Do you read and study the Bible on your own or just depend on others to lead and teach you? Do you have a prayer life and connection with the Holy Spirit or do you just ask others to pray on your behalf? When you are taught the Bible, do you listen with a discerning ear or just accept everything that is given to you? To be able to identify false prophets and messiahs, we must know the true prophet and true Messiah. We can through the study of His Word and the daily connection with the Holy Spirit.

Do not become passive in your faith or worse, self-focused. Are you serving the Master in His household? How are you serving the family of God and others? Does your lifestyle reflect your commitment to Jesus Christ?

Why is He so slow?

Peter was one of the disciples who heard Jesus’ teaching on the signs, warnings and instructions. Years later when Peter was a church leader, he was still waiting for Jesus’ return. I can guess that some in the church were starting to get a little impatient. When was Jesus going to return? Some people started to scoff at the Christians. They laughed mocked them saying, “Where is this ‘coming’ He promised?” Peter encouraged the church and encourages us today to continue to watch and wait and live lives that bring glory to God.

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.
2 Peter 3:9-14 NIV

主所应许的尚未成就,有人以为他是耽延,其实不是耽延,乃是宽容你们,不愿有一人沉沦,乃愿人人都悔改。 但主的日子要像贼来到一样。那日,天必大有响声废去,有形质的都要被烈火销化,地和其上的物都要烧尽了。 这一切既然都要如此销化,你们为人该当怎样圣洁,怎样敬虔, 切切仰望Shen的日子来到。在那日,天被火烧就销化了,有形质的都要被烈火 化。 但我们照他的应许,盼望新天新地,有义居在其中。 亲爱的弟兄啊,你们既盼望这些事,就当殷勤,使自己没有玷污,无可指摘,安然见主;

We are still watching and waiting. But the day will certainly come when we see Him with our own eyes. Let’s be ready.
