My Auntie Joan and Uncle Tom have a nightly ritual thankfulness. Before they fall asleep, each one shares three specific things that they are thankful for on that particular day. This thankfulness habit has developed such a genuinely thankful heart that last week Auntie Joan told me that in these past days she just could not limit her thankfulness to three items. There was just too much each day to be thankful for. Are you a person who has a thankful heart? What does a thankful heart look like?
Paul: An example of a thankful heart
The Apostle Paul was a man with a thankful heart. He was so thankful in fact that he made this bold statement:
Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 NIV
All circumstances? No matter what? We are to give thanks? How can we have a thankful heart every step of life’s journey? Paul gives us some keys to thankfulness. If you find that your heart is not as thankful as you’d like it to be, maybe it is time to step up your thankful game.
A thankful heart works in partnership with others and God
Paul was a superstar of the New Testament. He spoke before governors and kings, started new churches across Asia and Europe, wrote most of the New Testament and heard directly from God. But this giant of the faith was regularly thankful for all those who served by his side. Paul is a hero of our faith, but he didn’t do the work alone. He served on a team and was quick to be grateful for their partnership.
I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. Philippians 1:3-5 NIV
This thankful heart is humble, acknowledging the work and presence of others in your life. When you express thankfulness for those in your life, you build stronger relationships and dependence on others and acknowledge your need for them. Through this kind of thankfulness, selfish self-focus melts away as you realize the importance of others in your life.
A thankful heart adds to thankful synergy in community with others
Paul loved being with brothers and sisters in Christ and he told his churches to regularly meet together and give thanks.
Speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 5:19-20 NIV
There is a thankful synergy that is created when we come together to worship and give thanks. When was the last time that you and your friends gave thanks to God together? Did your friend’s thankfulness inspire you to give even more thanks?
A thankful heart finds good in all situations
Paul was the amazing apostle of God who carried the Good News beyond the borders of Israel. As he traveled, he met people from many different nations and faced incredible trials. Through it all, he was a man who had the habit of giving thanks. Even as his ship was about to sink.
Just before dawn Paul urged them all to eat. “For the last fourteen days,” he said, “you have been in constant suspense and have gone without food—you haven’t eaten anything. Now I urge you to take some food. You need it to survive. Not one of you will lose a single hair from his head.” After he said this, he took some bread and gave thanks to God in front of them all. Then he broke it and began to eat. They were all encouraged and ate some food themselves.
Acts 27:33-36 NIV
You might not be in a boat right now like Paul, but you could be facing a figurative shipwreck in life. Is it possible to find something to be thankful for? After Paul gave thanks for their food, they ate and then the ship did sink. But all of those on the ship made it safely to shore. I can imagine that there was a lot of thanksgiving going on after swimming to the safety of the shore.
A thankful heart has peace regardless of circumstances
Paul knows that the Christian life is not easy. He had been beaten, imprisoned, accused, deserted, even bitten by a snake (after he survived that shipwreck!) Paul’s key to keeping peace in all situations was thanksgiving and bringing all worries to God.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 NIV
Do you have anxieties in your life? For a moment, let go of your anxious thoughts and instead turn your mind to what you have to be thankful for. Thank God for specific things that He has done for you today. Take those anxious thoughts to the feet of Jesus and present them to Him with your offering of thanks. Turn your mind away from anxiety toward thankfulness.

What are you thankful for today?
Can you follow my Auntie Joan’s example of thinking of at least three things that you are thankful for today? If you need help, the Apostle Paul has some words of thanks that you can use as your own. Paul was thankful for many things that God had given him, but most of all, he was thankful for salvation in Jesus Christ. Here are just a few of Paul’s many expressions of thanks to God. May they be your expression of thanks today as well.
“But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.”
Romans 6:17-18 NIV
“Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!
“But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere.”
2 Corinthians 2:14 NIV
2:14“But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
1 Corinthians 15:57 NIV
