For centuries, Christian pilgrims from around the world have traveled to Jerusalem to walk the “Via Dolorosa” or the Way of the Cross. It reenacts the journey Jesus took from Gethsemane through the streets of Old Jerusalem to the place where it is believed that Jesus was crucified. For the faithful who are not able to make the physical trip to Jerusalem, some churches around the world have recreated the Way of the Cross in their sanctuaries with a guided meditation of scripture and traditionally accompanied by art depicting the scenes from the Bible.

Let us join Christians from around the world as we walk together through the first 4 stations of the Way of the Cross. French painter James Tissot’s art will help us to visualize the passion of Jesus Christ as He walked the road to calvary to bear the sins of the world.

Station 1: Jesus on the Mount of Olives

He came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples followed him. When he reached the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not come into the time of trial.” Then he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and prayed, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my will but yours be done.” [Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and gave him strength. In his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.] When he got up from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping because of grief, and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not come into the time of trial.”
Luke 22:39-46

My Soul is Sorrowful Unto Death
James Tissot

The cross was Jesus’ destiny. It was also His greatest trial. In prayer He honestly poured out His heart to the Father revealing the anguish of His soul. As He wrestled in prayer, He laid down His own will to accept the Father’s will. Through this time set apart for deep prayer, Jesus gained the victory of obedient surrender and had the resolve follow the Father’s will unto death.

Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
Hebrews 12:2-3 NIV

Am I able to follow Jesus’ example and say, “Not my will but Yours be done?” Do I believe that God’s will is the best will for my life? Jesus understands the inner struggle of surrender; may He strengthen us so that we can follow His example of living out God’s perfect plan.

Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for your obedience to the Father’s will. I ask for the desire and strength to let go of my own will and accept the Father’s will for my life. I now put my life into your hand.

The Kiss of Judas
James Tissot

It is easy to look at Judas and shake our heads and wonder how he could do it. With a kiss, the darkness in Judas’ heart – his love for money and false dedication to Jesus – was exposed. What darkness is lingering in my heart? I sing worship songs, pray prayers and appear to be a whole-hearted follower of Jesus. But in taking a closer look at my heart, I see that my thoughts, words and actions do not always honor my Lord.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me…Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Psalms 51:1-3, 10 NIV

Lord God, please forgive me for the times I have told you I loved you and on the outside I looked Your follower but on the inside I was not wholly Yours. May Your light expose the darkness in my heart and may I be fully devoted to You.

Station 3: Jesus is Condemned by the Sanhedrin

When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, gathered together, and they brought him to their council. They said, “If you are the Messiah, tell us.” He replied, “If I tell you, you will not believe; and if I question you, you will not answer. But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” All of them asked, “Are you, then, the Son of God?” He said to them, “You say that I am.” Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips!”
Luke 22:66-71

The Tribunal of Annas
James Tissot

Stubborn unbelief blocked the minds and hearts of the religious leaders. Standing before them was Jesus Christ, the Messiah, Savior of the world, yet they had eyes that could not see, ears that could not hear. Though they were literally in His very presence, they completely missed the revelation of Jesus Christ.

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”
Romans 10:9-11 NIV

Lord God, give me eyes to see and ears to hear. Forgive me for unbelief that blocks me from seeing Your presence in my life. Increase my faith so I can see You clearly.

Station 4: Peter Denies Jesus

Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest’s house. But Peter was following at a distance. When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. Then a servant-girl, seeing him in the firelight, stared at him and said, “This man also was with him.” But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.” A little later someone else, on seeing him, said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!” Then about an hour later still another kept insisting, “Surely this man also was with him; for he is a Galilean.” But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about!” At that moment, while he was still speaking, the cock crowed. The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the cock crows today, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.
Luke 22:54-62

The Third Denial of Peter
James Tissot

Though he bravely followed Jesus through the darkness of the night, when standing in the light of the fire, and pointedly questioned, Peter’s courage disappeared. Possibly driven by fear, his instinct for self-preservation kicked in and he emphatically distanced himself from Jesus. It wasn’t just a one-time slip-up on Peter’s part. It was again and again. Until that cock crowed. And the face of His teacher, master, and friend that he had so forcefully denied, turned towards him to look him in the eye. In an instant, Peter’s heart was pierced and in tears he had to leave the presence of his Lord.

In the light of a fiery pressure-filled moment, have you ever abandoned your spiritual zeal and exchanged it for self-protection, compliance with the world, or just comfort and ease of living? Has fear overcome your love and devotion for Jesus? Exercise your faith, trust in God’s love and fear will be driven away.

“Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love.”
1 Corinthians 16:13-14 NIV

Lord Jesus, give me courage to follow you not just when it is easy or convenient, but also in the tough moments when the things of the world are pressing in around me. Please remove all fear in me and replace it with faith and trust in Your love and leading in my life.

I will take up my cross and follow

As we travel with Jesus through the Way of the Cross may we all be able to say:

I surrender to the King of my life and trust in His perfect plan.
I confess my sin and ask for the light of Christ to dispel the darkness within me.
I believe that Jesus is the Savior of the world.
I ask for courage to follow my Master wherever He leads me.
