Where can you go to get rest for your weary soul?

In Matthew 11: 28-30 we read Jesus saying:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30

Come

Come is not a command, it’s an invitation, a merciful invitation. Coming takes several action steps. In order to come we have to: hear the invitation, pay attention to it, decide yes, stop what we are doing, leave behind what we are doing, turn in the direction of the invitation and move toward Jesus.

As we move toward Jesus we realize that Jesus is always available. We don’t have to go on a special pilgrimage or a particular place or wait for the fellowship retreat. He is here now and asking you to come to him.

Come to ME

Come to me says, the world, your job, entertainment, things giving the appearance of happiness.Pay attention to me says our phones. And in all this noise we hear another voice: the voice of Jesus-Come to Me! Come to the only true God who loves you and cares about you. Come to the Almighty God who forgives your sins. Come to the Way, the Truth and the Life. There is salvation in no one else. Come to Me!

Come to me, all you…

Who can come? All can. Jesus is inviting everyone. He is calling your name to come! He is inviting the people who are trying to struggle though life without Jesus. And he is inviting the people who follow Jesus and have a life of trial, hardship, difficulty, pain and suffering. Which includes all of us.

All you who are weary and burdened

Specifically Jesus says all you who are weary and burdened. I am really, really weary with the disruptions our daily lives have had for these past years. Maybe you are, too. And along with weariness, in this world we have burdens.

First there is the burden of our guilt and sin. God says come let us reason together. He can take the heaviness of our sin away. He can take away the fear of death and give us the hope of heaven for after we die.

And yet while we are here and not yet in heaven we have burdens. We live in a fallen world. Your burdens might sound something like this:

First you have to be first in the class. Then you have to get accepted to a great university. After that you get educated some more and have to be first in the class again. Job stress comes next. After that you want to get married. Maybe you feel you are getting too old to get married and feel pressure from the family and society. Then you get married and you realize how hard it is. There are days you don’t want to be married! That person you married has strange habits! Then you long for a baby and then the baby gets sick or cries at night. You worry about the future for your children and wonder how to educate them. Will you lose your job? Should you change your job? Are you on the right career path? And all that over-time makes you so weary. Do you have enough money? How can you buy an apartment? How can you balance your career and family life?

The burdens continue…. Anxiety, loneliness, impatience, getting older, your health, the health of aging parents and grandparents. Relationships, friendships. Many burdens.

Sometimes it’s all coming at us at once. We feel pressed down, tired, burdened by our weary state of mind.

Jesus knows all this. He knows your weariness and heavy burdens. And he says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

In all his glory and holiness and supreme uniqueness Jesus is accessible. We don’t have to do anything first. He is approachable as we open ourselves to him. We don’t have to first unburden ourselves. We just come as we are.

Come to me and I will give you rest.
The precious rest from God cannot be earned, lent or bought. It is freely given by Him to us. A gift.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. .”

What is this rest? It’s our salvation. Not having to strive to be good enough to win our way into heaven. Resting in what He has done for us. This rest cannot be found in any earthy thing.

God’s rest cheers our hearts, sustains us when our spirit faints, helps us to bear loss patiently, gives us peace in the day of trouble. Lets us sleep when the world is falling down around us. We connect with him as we rest in him.

What happens when we come to Jesus? We find rest for our souls.

The other night something happened to trigger a memory and as I lay in bed trying to fall asleep, I went back over my life since I was 15 and had become a Christian. I ruminated for hours over all my stupidity over the years, sins, mistakes, regrets. Then I realized that it was too late to change any of it and Jesus had forgiven me of it all. So I decided to go to Jesus for his rest and as soon as I did I instantly fell asleep in his peace.

Jesus has this gracious expectation – it’s like He is saying, “I’m waiting here for you.” He kindly encourages us to come to him for free pardon and a new heart. Take a breather, take a vacation from the things of this world, relax awhile with God. Take his relief from your anxieties, and the cares of this world. So we cast all our cares on him and experience rest as his child.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me.

A yoke is a wooden farming device that held two animals together at the neck as they worked. We are yoked with Jesus. He moves, we move. He stops, we stop. We learn the way to live and work and rest from him. First hand. Notice we have a choice – to take the yoke or not.

And who is this Jesus we are yoked with? – One who is gentle and humble in heart. Matthew 11:28-30 is the only place that Jesus tells us about his own heart. He says that the innermost part of his being, His heart, is not harsh or easily exasperated. He is not frustrated with us. He is not with a pointed finger, but open arms. Gentleness and welcoming is who He is.

His yoke is easy and his burden is light.

In 2016 while vacationing in the US in Florida I hosted a baby shower for my niece. During the party my mother waved her arms and yelled, “Snake, snake!” Since my mother’s stroke she often gets her words mixed up saying “cup” instead of “sweater” or “car” when she really means to say “purse.” So we tried to figure out what she was so upset about. But as we looked where she was pointing, sure enough there was a huge black snake. We were in the living room and on the other side of the sliding glass door was this enormous snake in the screen porch. It had come in a small hole in the screen and could not get out of the screened in porch. My brave daughter-in-law, Amanda, jumped up, laced on her sneakers and armed with a broom confronted the unwanted party guest. The first thing Amanda did was open the screen porch door to the outside. “Shoo- shoo! Go home!” Amanda poked the snake with the broom trying to propel it toward the door. The confused snake made a few laps around the screen porch and then spotted the open door. The outdoors was calling to the snake. In a flash the snake went out the door, across the grass and disappeared into its wetland home, relieved and happy to be free to rest in its true home.

Like the outdoors calling the snake out of the small screen porch where it didn’t belong, Jesus calls us from our place of weariness and burdens where we don’t belong to abide in him. His heart is our true home, our place of rest. Jesus invites us:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30
