What can we do to remember and be encouraged by God’s work in our lives?
—
Have you ever had a really busy week where it seemed that each day flew into the next? As soon as one project got finished another thing popped up and you hardly got any rest? And then by the time Friday came you could hardly remember what you had done on Monday? Here’s a test – can you remember what you were doing one week ago? How about two weeks ago? Maybe your schedule is so busy the days seem to run together.
Jesus and the disciples had some days like that; they were so busy that they could hardly catch a moment to talk and have some down time. And at the end of the busy time the disciples could hardly remember what had happened a few days earlier.
Jesus’ busy week all started when He sent His disciples out on a mission assignment. He sent them out two by two with His authority and they went on a tour preaching, healing people and even casting out demons. While they were away, Jesus received the devastating news that His cousin and forerunner John the Baptist had been killed while in jail. This must have been a blow to Jesus because He started looking for some time to quietly be alone. But during these busy days, that time was hard to come by. For when the disciples came back from their ministry tour, Jesus tried to spend some time with them, but again the schedule was absolutely jam-packed.
The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.
Mark 6:30-34 NIV
When Jesus finished teaching, it was late in the day and the disciples became concerned about what the crowd was going to eat (or maybe they were feeling hungry themselves?) The meal they all ended up having together was the famous feeding of the 5000.
By end of these incredibly busy days, Jesus and the disciples must have been exhausted. Finally, Jesus found the quiet time He had been looking for as He sent the disciples off across the lake in a boat on their own. He got some time to rest, but it seems the disciples did not get any rest, for it was a windy night on the water.
Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray. Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.
Mark 6:45-52 NIV
When the disciples saw Jesus walking towards them on the water, what was their reaction? They cried out! They screamed! They were terrified. They didn’t recognize Jesus and thought He was a ghost.
Just days earlier the disciples had been preaching across the countryside, healing people and casting out demons. They were full of faith! Then they participated in the miraculous feeding of the 5000 and enjoyed a fantastic picnic together. This must have built up their faith! But late at night as they were straining at the oars against the wind, it seems like their brains went blank and they completely forgot all of the miracles and faith-building experiences. They were struggling against a wind and when Jesus came to them, they didn’t even recognize Him.
Our lives can also become very busy. With one event after another keeping us running and maybe feeling overwhelmed. God is with us in the busy schedule and we see marvelous things, but can you identify with the disciples – by the time you got all the way to Friday you forgot about Monday’s miracles? Or maybe the faithfulness of God you experienced on Wednesday was totally overshadowed by the difficulties you faced on Thursday?
The disciples were probably exhausted as they struggled against the wind late at night. Sometimes we can also become exhausted with the struggles of the day. And just like the disciples, we can become afraid and even not recognize Jesus. We might forget to call for His help or we might become unaware of His working in our lives.
Isn’t it wonderful that at that moment Jesus called out to the disciples and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” He let them know that He was there and they could have courage and could let go of their fear.
We can also learn from this story how important it is to remember what God has done in our lives. It seems that the disciples had not really understood what Jesus had done earlier. Their hearts were hard, the miracle of feeding the 5000 didn’t seem to sink into their heart and spirit.

“I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.”
Psalms 77:11 NIV
我要提说Ye He Hua所行的,我要记念你古时的奇事;
What happened to Jesus and the disciples next after He got in the boat? The wind they were struggling against immediately disappeared! And they kept going to the people in need. Jesus took the disciples with Him again to witness more miracles as He healed people.
When they got out of the boat people recognized Jesus – they were looking for Him and knew who He was! And they were healed.
When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there. As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.
Mark 6:53-56 NIV
Jesus is so patient with us. Even when we forget and become afraid or don’t recognize His work in our lives, He comes to us. He gets in the boat with us and calms our windy struggle and He takes us with Him again to be a part of His special work in the world.
What has Jesus done in your life this week? How has He helped you? Have you recognized Him? Are you struggling right now and do you need to remember the work that He has done in the past? What will you remember from today?
